Buying an aromatherapy diffuser in 2026? Five things decide which one you keep using
Almost every aromatherapy diffuser promises the same thing. What separates them is five questions: does it need water, how many square metres does it cover, how loud is it, what does scent cost a month, and can you set it and leave it.

Why candles and water diffusers let us down
A hallway gives a house away. We stop noticing our own, but anyone who steps in off a wet street knows within a second what our week has been: coats drying on the pegs, the cat's tray behind the door, Sunday's fish.
We have thrown plenty at it. Candles first, in glass jars with a black ring round the rim by the end of the month. Then reeds you only smell standing over them. Then a white machine full of water that wants rinsing every week.
What we wanted was plain enough. A house that smells the way we choose, at six on a Thursday as much as on a Saturday, with nobody lighting, refilling or scrubbing anything to make it happen.

The five things to look at
Every question here has one figure or one word that belongs in the specification. When it is missing, that is an answer in itself.
1Water or no water?
An ultrasonic diffuser vaporises water with a few drops of oil in it. That means topping up, rinsing out every week and limescale on the plate in the end. The US Environmental Protection Agency writes that machines like this can push micro-organisms from the tank into the room.
Waterless means clicking in a pod, and nothing to refill.

2How many square metres must it cover?
Measure the room it will stand in, and count the kitchen if it opens onto it. A British sitting room with the kitchen knocked through is quickly 40 to 65 m², roughly 430 to 700 sq ft.
Then pick a machine the maker rates for at least that area. No figure at all is an answer in itself: assume a small room.

3Can you hear it at night?
A diffuser runs for hours, often beside the sofa or on a bedside table. Around 40 dB is what makers call whisper-quiet; around 60 dB they compare to a calm conversation, and in a quiet bedroom you hear that.
For a bedroom we would stay under 45 dB. No decibel figure listed? Read the customer reviews for the word noise.

4What does scent cost a month?
A pod is £27 for 65 ml and lasts one to three months, about £14 a month at twelve hours a day (manufacturer's figure).
Burn a candle for four hours every evening and a Yankee jar costs you £24 a month. A premium one is another matter: a Jo Malone candle of 45 hours at £56 works out at £1.24 an hour, or £149 a month. The refill decides, not the purchase price.

5Do you run it from your phone?
A machine you switch on by hand every morning is off within a month. With an app and a weekly schedule the house smells the way you chose at six in the evening, without anyone thinking about it.

2Is an aromatherapy diffuser safe?
depends on oil and hours
A diffuser is neither safe nor unsafe in itself; it depends on what you disperse and for how long. Air the room now and then, use oil made for the machine, and take care around pets and small children. More on diffuser safety.
3How long does one pod last?
well over 2 months
One to three months, depending on the setting and the hours a day. At twelve hours a day on a medium setting that is well over two months, on Scentech's own figures. On the highest setting a pod is gone in about a month.
4Can I use my own essential oil?
no, Scentech pods only
No. The Scentech diffusers run on the company's own pods of blended fragrance oil, and other oils fall outside the warranty. If your own single-note lavender is the whole point, an ultrasonic water diffuser is the honest answer, tank and rinsing included.
5Reed diffuser or an electric one?

6Are the pound prices fixed?
